We will stop, look and listen for the arrival of plants and flowers, birds and other harbingers of spring. Hikes are weather dependent and will be cancelled for treacherous local driving conditions (mud), rain, snow or very strong winds. Always check the road and weather conditions for the entire length of your trip up as local weather can be quite different. Some hikes may recommend snow shoe hikes  (I will let you know). Poles and crampons are recommended for navigating wet and slippery conditions typical of spring hikes. It is recommended to bring snacks and water for the hike. A dry set of  socks and shoes is a good idea for the trip home. A sweep, topic experts – all are welcome!

Terrain: Dependent on Conditions, Moderate – Some hills and/or some poor footing, Slippery and Steep Sections, Slippery Sections Likely, Strenuous – Hilly with steep climbs and some poor footing
    Distance: Varies 18-23km

    Description

    Overview

This is a special series of 6 hikes to complete the entire Iroquoia section of the Bruce Trail.  There is a new accomplishment badge, included in the registration fee – which was designed by Joe Borges and features the endangered Jefferson Salamander. https://www.ontario.ca/document/five-year-review-progress-towards-protection-and-recovery-ontarios-species-risk-2015-0/jefferson-salamander

For this E2E in 6, we will be following the main trail southbound eventually finishing in Grimsby. Please note that you are signing up for the entire series of six hikes as a Group Hike. The Iroquoia in 6 series is geared to experienced long distance hikers with the expectation of a 3.5  to 5.0 km/ hr. pace maintained over an 18 to 23 km day.  No dropout points have been established and therefore hikers who must drop out, will be responsible for their own transportation. Please be honest about your hiking abilities.

Hikers will be expected to to be wearing proper hiking boots and layered clothing with the expectation of cool and possible wet weather, icy trail conditions. Sufficient food and water for a full day of hiking is required and hiking poles, crampons and wet weather gear are recommended. A 10-15 minute on-trail lunch break will be scheduled. The time will be dependent on weather conditions.

The fee goes towards supporting the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club, which in turn supports the mission of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, which is: “Preserving a ribbon of wilderness, for everyone, forever.”

For the time being, registration for the Iroquoia E2E-in-Six will be limited to members of the Bruce Trail Conservancy.  Hikers can belong to any section.

maximum of 1 (of the 6) hikes can be self-completed as a result of scheduling challenges, but it is intended that this badge be earned while hiking as part of a group led by a certified hike leader. Car shuttles are shared amongst the hikers.

Please note there are no refunds!

This particular set of 6 hikes is intended to be BRISK.  Please be honest about your degree of physical fitness prior to registration.

    TRANSPORTATION

This series will be through hikes and will require car shuttling, you must be willing to drive or to be a passenger. Some parking locations require paid parking, and hikes that enter Halton Conservation Areas will require reservations.  The fee for the E2E-in-Six does not cover any parking/entry fees for hikers who are not members of the Halton CA and/or Hamilton CA.  If the group has enough hikers who are members of a CA, those will be the cars chosen to park in those areas so as to minimize costs but since conservation passes are not free, please consider nominal compensation to the pass holder.  At least one hike starts at one CA and possibly ends at another, so parking fees are unavoidable for non-CA members.

Please remember, like all hikes, this is a Leave No Trace hike. Pack out whatever you pack in. Do not throw anything onto or into any sections of the trail.

Remember, you can only miss one hike to qualify for this special Jefferson Salamander badge. You must still complete the one day distance you have missed.  If you miss more than one but still complete the distances on your own, you may apply for the regular club End to End badge.

COVID-19 Precautions Before, During and After your Hike

    1. Each hiker joining a Bruce Trail Club organized hike must perform a self-screening check before hiking.
      Find Ontario’s self-assessment tool here: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/
    2. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, stay home.
    3. Personal Protective Equipment:
      • Hikers may choose to wear masks

    Transportation

It is the Bruce Trail Conservancy’s current policy that car shuttles are allowed.  It is at the discrepancy of individual hike leaders to make that decision.

    Other Guidelines

    1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
    2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
    3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
    4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
    5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
    6. Bring your own first aid kit.
    7. Please leave dogs at home.

    Distance: 18-23km per outing

    Description

The Iroquoia in 6 series is geared to experienced long distance hikers with the expectation of a 3  to 4.0 km/ hr. pace maintained over an 18 to 23 km day.

Sufficient food and water for a full day of hiking is required and hiking poles, crampons (icers) and wet weather gear are recommended.

This particular set of 6 hikes is intended to be Medium Pace 3-4km per hour.

The hiking schedule will be sent to all registered hikers prior to our start date.

Registration will close once the hike is full or one week prior to our first day, whichever occurs first and is limited to 9 hikers plus the hike leader.

    Description

Join me and apprentice hike leader, Mehrnoush Ahmadi, for the second of three connecting Toronto urban hikes, often hiked by Wayne Crockett. Part 1 took us from Castle Frank Subway Station to the end of the Kay Gardiner Beltline. In Part 2 we will hike the length of Prospect Cemetery from south to north, eventually linking up with the York Beltline which will take us in proximity to the end of Part 1. This section through the cemetery is challenging with its share of hills and ups and downs. The remainder of the hike will be relatively easier as we move our way east and then south and southeast through the Cedervale and Nordheimer Ravines. We will stop for Lunch at the Loblaws on St Clair before rejoining the ravine system and continuing southeast to Roycroft Park, emerging in the Republic of Rathnelly. Wayne jokingly commented on his FB page, “There was a revolution and no one called me?” From there we will link up with Ramsden Park to finish the hike at Rosedale Subway Station.

Public washrooms at the start of the hike at Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre will be closed because of the holiday. Please try to find a washroom on route to the hike.

    Description

Join us as we look for clues of spring’s arrival on Cape Chin North. We will alternate two routes on a weekly basis, watching for seasonal changes along the wetlands, small inland lakes, woodlands and escarpment shoreline.

    Alternating hikes:

Hike1 (Mar 12, 26, Apr 9): From km 109.7 parking, Otter Lk ST (2.2 km), up Cape Chin N Rd (past Tagwerk) to Cape Chin Meadow ST (1km) to Cape Chin Driveway (2.5 km) to house, North along MT back to parked vehicles (3.6 km ) – Total 9.3 km approx

    Description

    Welcome to Tuesday Trekkers

The goal of this hike is to earn the NEW BEAVER VALLEY ACCOMPLISHMENT BADGE!!  WOOT WOOT!!!

The Tuesday Trekkers will achieve this new badge by hiking all 8 Tuesdays in this series. As life sometimes can be interrupted and you need to bail on a hike please don’t stress. You can make up two hikes on your own and still qualify for the badge on the final day. Please keep a log of the missed hikes and get them to me by the last day.

The fee goes towards supporting the Beaver Valley Bruce Trail Club, which in turn supports the mission of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, which is: “Preserving a ribbon of wilderness, for everyone, forever.”

For the time being, registration for the Beaver Valley E2E in 8  will be limited to members of the Bruce Trail Conservancy.  Hikers can belong to any section.

Please note there are no refunds!

This particular set of 8 hikes is intended to be BRISK (4K-5K PER HOUR) Please be honest about your degree of physical fitness prior to registration.

All hikes in this series will include a car shuttle and everyone will take a turn as a shuttle driver. Trails will be wet at this time of year so please be prepared with extra socks and gaiters. Experience with hiking 16k/day at a brisk pace (4-5km/hr) is essential. Ideally we will hike from km0 to km119.9 over the series of 8 hikes but as conditions change and parking issues arise I will ask you to be flexible with the routes and trust our judgment. You will receive an e-mail outlining meeting location and start location for each hike as well as any other information needed closer to the start of the hike event.

We will have a clothing adjustment break, and 2 snack/lunch breaks of 10 min each. Please have your water accessible while hiking (water bladder recommended)

There will be plenty of opportunity for photos. I recommend having your camera/phone accessible to get all those great shots.

    No dogs!

Distance: Each hike ranges 10 to 12 km

    Description

Join us as we look for clues of spring’s arrival on Cape Chin North. We will alternate two routes on a weekly basis, watching for seasonal changes along the wetlands, small inland lakes, woodlands and escarpment shoreline.

    Alternating hikes:

Hike1 (Mar 12, 26, Apr 9): From km 109.7 parking, Otter Lk ST (2.2 km), up Cape Chin N Rd (past Tagwerk) to Cape Chin Meadow ST (1km) to Cape Chin Driveway (2.5 km) to house, North along MT back to parked vehicles (3.6 km ) – Total 9.3 km approx

Help us clean up the Pine River Nature Reserve as part of Earth Week.

The Pine River Nature Reserve had been used for many years, prior to the Bruce Trail acquiring the reserve, by many off-roaders and people that were not overly concerned with preserving the lands.  As such, there is a considerable amount of garbage to be found throughout the reserve.  Your help in cleaning up this garbage will help the earth, wildlife, and future generations to come.

Bring a bag and come along and join us!

Park at 2nd line west and 15 sideroad and walk along 15 sideroad to find us and our garbage bin.  All ages are welcome to help and “Take a Hike” buttons for kids.

Long sleeves are recommended & don’t forget your work gloves.

If parking fills up at the bottom of the hill there is room for a couple of cars to park at the trail head at Ridge Road.

    Pace: Brisk, Medium
    Terrain: Difficult, Moderate
Distance: Approximately 8-22km per day depending on available parking locations and restrictions

    Description

Please note: there are no refunds or transfers. If you register for this hike and change your mind, please cancel your name from the registered list as there will be others on the waitlist. It is very important to read all the details for this hike prior to registering.

    Overview:

This is a special series of 10 hikes to complete the Peninsula section of the Bruce Trail. There will be a new accomplishment badge included in the registration fee featuring the Turkey Vulture – which will hopefully be made available on our last day.

For this E2E in 10, we will be following the main trail, generally heading northbound and eventually finishing in Tobermory. Please note that you are signing up for the entire series of 10 hikes as a Group Hike. The Peninsula in 10 series is geared to experienced long distance hikers with the expectation of a 3.0 – 5.0km/hr. pace maintained over a 15km plus day. The section is approximately 165km so daily distances will be based on available parking and timed parking restrictions. No dropout points have been established and therefore hikers who must dropout, will be responsible for their own transportation back to their vehicle. Please note that transportation back to your vehicle is very limited this section. Cell phone reception can also be a challenge in this section.

Please be honest about your hiking abilities. We will hike at a steady pace and there will be plenty of time for pictures and to enjoy the flora and fauna of this beautiful, rugged and challenging section.

Again, this particular set of 10 hikes is intended to be Moderate/Brisk. Please be honest about your degree of physical fitness prior to registration. It is a group hike so it is important that you are able to keep pace with the person in front of you.

    Attire and Daily Hikes

Hikers are expected to wear proper hiking boots and layered clothing with the expectation of cool and possible wet weather. Sufficient food and water for a full day of hiking is required as well as hiking poles (if you use them), and wet weather gear is strongly recommended. Bug spray is also suggested. Clothing adjustments and bio-breaks are as needed. Please let the sweep know and they will wait for you. A morning break around 10:30 and a 10-15 minute on-trail lunch break will be scheduled. An afternoon break will be based on our expected finish time. Depending on weather and trail conditions, these times may vary.

    Fee

The fee goes toward supporting the Peninsula Bruce Trail Club, which in turn supports the missions of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, which is “Preserving a ribbon of wilderness, for everyone, forever.”

    Car Shuttles and Missing Hikes

A maximum of 3 (of the 10) hikes can be self-completed as a result of scheduling challenges, but it is intended that this badge be earned while hiking as part of a group led by a certified hike leader. Car shuttles are shared amongst the hikers. If you know you will miss more than 3 of the hikes, it’s likely best to sign up for another end to end, however, whatever hikes are completed on this series may go toward completion of an independent E2E for the regular Peninsula E2E Flowerpot badge. If you are able to complete the hikes you know you will miss ahead of time, all the better.

    Transportation

This series will be through-hikes and will require car shuttling. You must be willing to drive and/or be a passenger. Some parking locations require paid parking, and hikes that enter the Bruce Peninsula National Park. The fee of this E2E-in10 does not include any parking/entry fee for hikers. These costs, where applicable, will be shared amongst all participants unless you have a parking or park pass.

    Accommodations

It is strongly recommended you make reservations for accommodations as soon as you register for the hike. Accommodations can be made anywhere in the Peninsula but Lion’s Head is about mid-way.

    Daily

We will meet for each hike by at least 7:45am each day. A schedule for meeting and start locations will be sent to each participant in April. We will begin in Tobermory and hike the BPNP area the first four day to limit the parking costs and restrictions. After that we will move south. The schedule is subject to change.

The hike is limited to 8 participants, including the hike leader.
