    Description

Introduction to the Iroquoia End-2-End In Ten Hike Series

This series of 10 hikes will be led by Jacqueline Van Dyke (vdyke0946@gmail.com)

This is a special series of 10 hikes with a new accomplishment badge. The registration fee includes the new special event badge, however, it will be up to a hiker who has not earned the badge in time to receive it on the last hike to arrange to pick up the badge or have it posted to them.

The fee goes towards supporting the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club, which in turn supports the mission of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, which is: “Preserving a ribbon of wilderness, for everyone, forever.”

For the time being, registration for the Iroquoia E2E-in-Ten will be limited to members of the Bruce Trail Conservancy.  Hikers can belong to any section.

maximum of 3 (of the 10) hikes can be self-completed as a result of scheduling challenges, but it is intended that this badge be earned while hiking as part of a group led by a certified hike leader.

Please note there are no refunds!

This particular set of 10 hikes is intended to be MEDIUM.  Please be honest about your degree of physical fitness prior to registration.

    TRANSPORTATION

This series will be through hikes and will require car shuttling, you must be willing to drive or to be a passenger. Some parking locations require paid parking, and hikes that enter Halton Conservation Areas will require reservations.  The fee for the E2E-in-Ten does not cover any parking/entry fees for hikers who are not members of the Halton CA and/or Hamilton CA.  If the group has enough hikers who are members of a CA, those will be the cars chosen to park in those areas so as to minimize costs.  At least one hike starts at one CA and ends at another, so parking fees are unavoidable for non-CA members.

    OTHER GUIDELINES

    1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike
    2. Please ensure you dress for forecasted weather and the terrain
    3. Wear sturdy footwear – hiking boots are strongly recommended. Standard running shoes are NOT recommended.  A fresh pair of socks is a delight halfway through a hike
    4. Hiking poles or a walking stick are optional but recommended
    5. Always carry I.D. and your health card
    6. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated)
A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer
    7. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent.  A hat is also highly recommended
    8. Bring your own first aid kit
    9. Masks are to be worn in vehicles
    10. Please leave dogs at home
    11. Current guidelines on group hiking apply: https://brucetrail.org/pages/explore-the-trail/hike-schedule

Each hiker will receive full details on our routes, including where to meet and where we will shuttle to start our hike, closer to the start date.

    Pace: Brisk – 4 to 5 km/hr
Terrain: Easy – Mostly flat and usually good footing
    Distance: 28.5km.

    Description

This series of five hikes is geared toward the experienced hiker capable of maintaining a sustained 3.5 km./hr to 5.0 km./hr. pace for the day. The combined hike distances of 144 km. make this the longest hike offered by the Niagara Section and the equivalent of doing a sectional E2E for many of the other sections. It is in fact the longest side trail in the entire Bruce Trail Conservancy.  Although generally flat and almost entirely paved the speeds and distances involved (between 26 and 34 km. ) make this a difficult series. Hikers will be expected to wear proper hiking boots and clothing, because of  changing weather conditions and be carrying sufficient water and food for a full day of hiking.

    Pace: Brisk – 4 to 5 km/hr
Terrain: Easy – Mostly flat and usually good footing
    Distance: 28.5 km.

    Description

This series of hikes is geared toward the experienced hiker capable of maintaining a steady 3.5 km./hr. to 5.0 km./ hr. pace over relatively easy terrain but for extended distances. The hikes are therefore somewhat similar to sectional E2Es and good experience for those considering these hikes for next year, or hikers just wanting to stay in shape before the holidays. Despite being mainly over paved trail, hikers are expected to wear proper hiking clothes and hiking boots, due to changeable and probable wet weather conditions.  Hikers are also expected to carry sufficient water and food supplies for personal use, over an entire day of hiking, and a brief on trail lunch stop has been allowed for. Badges will be available for purchase by successful hikers upon completion of the series in N-O-T-L  ($10.00).

COVID-19 Precautions Before, During and After your Hike

    1. Each hiker joining a Bruce Trail Club organized hike must perform a self-screening check before hiking.
      Find Ontario’s self-assessment tool here: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/
    2. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, stay home.
    3. Personal Protective Equipment:
      • Hikers may choose to wear masks

    Transportation

It is the Bruce Trail Conservancy’s current policy that car shuttles are allowed.  It is at the discrepancy of individual hike leaders to make that decision.

    Other Guidelines

    1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
    2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
    3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
    4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
    5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
    6. Bring your own first aid kit.
    7. Please leave dogs at home.

Because of the distances involved for those completing two hikes per day (which will require 7-8 hours), hikers will meet each day at 8:00 AM. carpool to the start point and begin hiking by 8:30 each day.  No provision for dropouts (apart from ~midway, for those hiking even-numbered hikes in the new year) has been made and transportation in this instance will be the hiker’s personal responsibility.

The terrain in some places is tough, and depending on weather conditions, could be slippery. Proper hiking boots and attire is therefore mandatory and hiking poles, rain gear, sufficient water, food and clothing in layers is advisable.

This particular set of 10 hikes is intended to be BRISK (where conditions safely allow)Please be honest about your degree of physical fitness prior to registration.
