Description

Quarries and Kilns
Length: 8.1 km; fairly easy with some rocky sections; will take up to 4 hours due to numerous interpretive stops

Join us for a fascinating hike through 420 million years of geology and nearly two centuries of quarrying history led by Beth Gilhespy - Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy and author of a series of books on the geology of the Bruce Trail. We will walk from Speyside to Limehouse. discovering ancient tropical reef deposits and crinoid fossils, explore a glacial spillway, and learn how the Escarpment’s different rock layers supported a thriving quarrying and lime industry. We’ll finish among the remarkable rock formations and historic lime kilns of Limehouse Conservation Area

The meeting location is the end of the hike in Limehouse, at the Limehouse Community Centre, the corner of 22nd Sideroad and 5th Line. There is lots of parking opposite the school on 22 sideroad. From there we will car shuffle back to the 3rd Line to begin our hike.
