    Description

    Earn the Cheltenham Badlands Stained Glass/Fundraiser badge, which is part of the collectable Bruce Trail Clubs stained glass-themed fundraiser set. Hike distances range from 17 km to 20 km for the 4-day end to end series.

    Please dress according to the weather presented that day. Bring snacks, lunch and water (electrolytes) for a long day of hike.

    This is a car shuttle hike. Please have your vehicle ready as everyone will be taking a turn either to drive us to the start point of our hike or to get our drivers back at the end of the day.

    Description

    We will complete a loop hike through the Park, crossing the Credit River above the Cataract Falls. The hike will take us by the the Cataract Falls and along the east bank of the Credit River then north through the main park past glacial features and old homesteads. Trail conditions should be dry.

    The meeting point is the intersection of Mississauga Road and Cataract Road. Parking is located on both sides of the road. Park in marked areas only.

    Description

    On this series of three hiking days,  we will complete the five loop hikes that are required to earn the Caledon Hills Sideways Badge.  If you are not interested in earning the badge, please join us for some great hiking.  Hikers can sign up for individual hikes as you do not need to complete all three to participate.  The dates of the three hiking days will be April 13, April 27 and May 11.  We will meet at the starting point at 9am each week.  Our finishing time is an approximation.  On each of the first two hiking days, we will be completing two of the loops.  On May 11, there will be one loop hike and if there is interest, we will hike another loop in Mono Cliffs Provincial Park.  Each loop is approximately 10 km in length.  For more information about the hikes, please see the link below:

    Carpooling is encouraged.  Since these are loop hikes, we will not need to shuttle.   On the first day, a Provincial Park Daily Vehicle Permit Reservation will be required.  We will be parking and hiking in the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park on Day 1.  Passes that can be used when making the reservation can be purchased through the Ontario Provincial Park website or borrowed from your local library.  If a car does not have a pass, the cost of the Daily Vehicle Permit reservation will be split between those people in that car.

    More information, including specific details about the meeting points, will be provided to those who sign up for the hikes.

    Description

    We will hike a loop using the Main Trail and the Canada Goose Side Trail.  We will hike through the Limehouse Conservation Area passing the remains of the restored powder magazine, a lime kiln, and an old mill.  We will skirt the edge of farmland and a quarry as well as hike through hardwood forest.

    Expect the trail to be wet with the melt; 1.5 km of road will give us break from the spring conditions.

    Plan is for a couple of stops for hydration and clothing adjustments and a snack break.

    Dress in layers, hiking boots required, poles and gaiters recommended.

    Description

    The Club will continue to improve the trail in the Badlands on Thursday, April 16th (weather permitting) with laying down landscape cloth and covering it with gravel on the trail. Lightly loaded wheelbarrows of gravel will be wheeled 900 metres from the parking lot to the trail to spread. This project requires enthusiasm and 10 – 12 volunteers for a few hours. Wheelbarrows and rakes will be provided. Work gloves are appropriate. Bring your own refillable water bottle.

    Description

    The main trail at Hockley Resort is being rerouted and this work has to be done before golf season starts.  On Friday, April 17th at 10:00 a.m. volunteers are needed to do benching, lopping of undergrowth and raking for trail building.

    This project will take a few hours – volunteers need to bring some lunch, gloves and water.  We are looking for 10-12 volunteers – experienced or novice and willing to learn.

    Hello, I am exited to organize the first Dog-Friendly hike – a pilot program for the TBTC. My dog is an 2 years old Australian Sheppard, she is friendly with humans and other dogs. Dogs must be on leash. If you will be bringing your dog please read the Bruce Trail dog policy – https://brucetrail.org/dogs-on-the-trail/
    This hike is a loop hike, we will return to parking lot. Reserve and pay for a daily Vehicle pass online at https://reservations.ontarioparks.com. If you are a badge hunter this hike is 1/4 of Caledon side trail badge. Future hikes TBA. Participants who register can expect at least one dog present on the hike.

    Description

    On Tuesday, April 21st volunteers are needed to continue with Habitat Restoration at the Badlands. This is a significant project that requires a large group of volunteers. This spring, the focus will be on treating the standing Buckthorn with a basal bark herbicide. There is an opportunity for volunteers that are not licensed pesticide applicators to be trained and supervised by licensed staff. You will be trained before the work starts, becoming ‘Assistant Trainees’, and perform the same tasks as the two licensed pesticide applicators.

    We also need sawyers, spotters, loppers, extractigators, and brush clearers. There is something for everyone! In addition to buckthorn treatment, the group will be cutting down some of the larger Buckthorn and treating the stumps with herbicide.

    Volunteers who are able to be herbicide application trainees need to arrive for 10:00 a.m. Training will be provided by BTC Staff. We need 6 Herbicide applicators who will be supervised by a licensed exterminator – note these volunteers start at 10:00 a.m. for training/instruction. There will be 3 Assistant Trainees per licensed exterminator. These volunteers will be provided with Personal protective equipment; need to wear rugged outdoor work clothes.
    We are looking for 8 plus sawyers, spotters, loppers, pruners and brush clearers, extractigator users and these volunteers start at 10:30 a.m. We will pair at least one sawyer/lopper volunteer with a herbicide applicator. Volunteers who are sawyers, spotters, loppers and brush clearers, extractigator users arrive at 10:30 a.m.
    Registration to participate will be through the BTC Hike Schedule.

    When you register, please indicate whether you are interested in becoming:
    a) one of the 6 Assistant Trainee Pesticide Applicators
    OR
    b) you are a trained a sawyer and will do that
    OR
    c) you want to be a spotter, using loppers and doing brush clearing, and an extractigator

    All volunteers will need gloves and a water bottle. Water and snacks will be provided along with a sense of accomplishment and pride that we are continuing the project to restore the Badlands.

    Description

    There and back on both the Main Trail and the Rockside Side Trail, about 3.8 km, with some hills and rugged sections. Hiking poles can be a great help. The pace will be slow at times with numerous stops to observe the spring ephemerals, listen to bird song and take photos. Bring your binoculars, camera and cellphone. Apps like Merlin, Seek, and iNaturalist will help identify flora and fauna along the route.

    Description

    We will complete a loop hike through the nature reserve along one of the hilliest sections of the Trail. Spring flowers should be in bloom adding colour.

    After the hike those interested can meet for refreshments in the local area.

    To get to the meeting point drive north on Hwy 10 past Orangeville to Hockley Road. Turn right and go about 6 km to the parking area. It is across the road from the Black Birch restaurant.
