Get away from the commercialism of the season and enjoy the quiet of the woods with friends on the north shore of Cootes Paradise in the Royal Botanical Gardens. We will take in the Ray Lowes Side Trail, the Hopkins’ Loop, the Bull’s Point Trail, the Captain Cootes Trail and more. You might even want to bring a few sunflower seeds to feed the birds when they alight on your outstretched hand. Please bring icers, hiking boots, and something warm to drink. Description
This property was originally homesteaded and there is a loop hike that winds through wooded areas crossing over stone fences and joins the main trail on Escarpment for part of this hike. There are fossils to see, a large barn foundation, a dug well and parts of a small plane that crashed in a storm in the 1970’s. Parking is on 2nd Concession S, north of Grey Rd 18. Map 30. The hike time will be approximately 2 1/2 hours.

This is part of our educational series. We’ll be starting at the Dundas Museum and Archives and strolling over to the centre of town and around to look at the old town of Dundas which will be beautifully decorated for Christmas. Austin at Dundas Museum & Archives has offered to give us a brief tour of the museum where the exhibit features old postcards of the town after our walk. There are many places to stop for a snack or lunch after in this historic town that was once the industrial centre of Lower Canada. Parking is free during the pre-Christmas season. Wear good walking shoes or hiking boots. Bring snacks and water, even if you plan to stop. Registration isn’t required but it helps me figure out how many people will be coming and let them know if its cancelled due to inclement weather. Description
Crawford Lake Conservation Area is a jewel to explore at any time of year. We will explore the area, including the Boardwalk and the lookout. Afterward those who wish can explore the recreated Indian village. Meet in the lower parking lot of the Conservation Area which is located on the east side of Guelph Line, north of Derry Rd. Bring water and a snack. Parking fee in effect or Conservation Area Pass. Icers may be necessary.

Directions: From Guelph and surrounding area: From Hwy 6 north, turn left onto Marden Rd./Wellington County Rd. 30. In 4.6 km turn right onto Wellington County Rd. 86. In 3 km turn left onto Ariss Valley Rd./Township Rd. 52. In 10 km turn left onto Katherine St./Waterloo Regional Rd. 23. Turn right onto Sawmill Rd./Waterloo Regional Rd. 17. In 6.2 km, at the roundabout take the second exit to stay on Sawmill Rd. In 500 m turn left onto King St. North, St. Jacob’s. After crossing the bridge take the next street left onto Albert St. Parking lot will be on the left.
From the 401: Take the Hwy 8 exit to Kitchener. Continue on 7/8 Conestoga Pkwy to Waterloo ( take the right branch of the highway). The Pkwy will end once through Waterloo and will become Hwy 85. At the roundabout in St. Jacob’s take the 3rd exit onto Sawmill Rd. After 500 meters turn left onto King St., St. Jacob’s. After crossing the bridge take the first street left onto Albert St. Parking lot will be on the left.

Description
We will hike there and back along the Health Valley Trail and then an additional 3 km on the Mill Race Trail. You can drop out after the Health Valley Trail.
The Health Valley Trail hike meanders along the Conestogo River. The Mill Race Trail follows along a millrace used to divert water from the Conestogo River to supply energy to the Snyder flour mill. Here we can feed the Chickadees that are eager to eat seeds and nuts right out of your hand.
Lunch will be at the Stone Crock restaurant in St. Jacobs. I will book the private party room for 1 PM so we can all sit together.

Sunrise is at 7:28 am for this year’s winter solstice! Take a break from seasonal frenzy and enjoy a leisurely hike along the sections of the Bruce, Red Oak and Hilton Falls Trails at Hilton Falls Conservation Area. Meet at the parking lot at 8:45 am for sign in. Fee if you don’t have a Conservation Halton annual pass. Please note that this is a slower hike for those who want to experience winter at a slower pace in this beautiful conservation area and view the falls. Registration not required but helps.
