Distance: Approximately between 16 to 17 km

    Description

This hike is a to and back from the McCrae Lake parking lot to the McCrae Lake Rapids. There are no dropouts because of the lack of access roads to the trail. There are plenty of ups/downs, but the ups are not very steep or long. There are also places with large rock outcroppings that can be slippery after a rainfall. There are numerous stream crossings supported by branches and fallen logs. Depending on the environmental condition at the time of the hike, crossing can be slippery and hazardous. If you are uncertain about your abilities to use the makeshift bridges, then avoid them and walking through the stream. The streams are very shallow, but can be muddy.
There will be mosquitos so bring bug net or bug repellent, but remember do not spray bug repellent in the bus. You will have plenty of time once we get off the bus to apply the bug repellent.
Bring 2 liters of water, snacks, and a lunch. Also bring your first-aid kit and any medication that you may need for the hike.
Dress in layers and use your common sense to make sure your attire is appropriate for the weather condition at the time of the hike. Your footwear should be sturdy and waterproof. If you have hiking poles, then this is the trip to bring them along, but please review the hiking pole etiquette. Note: This is hike is geared toward experienced hikers.

    Description

Today we are looking for ferns to identify with the help of BTC Ecologist Mara McHaffie.
THis are is diverse and has some wet areas so hopefully we will find some interesting plants. THis is a slow paced look and learn hike. This will be a good opportunity for hikers to collect some of the requirements of the TBTC Naturalist badge. Please bring a light lunch or snacks and lots of water . Cameras and the iNaturalist app on your phone will be handy to record what we are going to see. Last fall I saw some rather interesting fungi in this area too.
This hike will go rain or shine, so dress for the weather.

    Description

Calling all families with children who love hiking and earning badges!!!

This is the ninth in a series of ten hikes that will be offered throughout 2024 on a roughly monthly basis so that children who are 15 years of age and younger can earn the Dufferin Hi-Land Adventurer Youth Badge and their parents/guardians can earn the Dufferin Hi-Land Side Trails Badge at the same time!!!  Details regarding the requirements for each badge can be found here: https://dufferinbrucetrailclub.org/dufferin-bruce-trail-club-badges/  Each of the ten hikes will be a loop hike so no car shuttles will be needed, and each hike will cover a distance of approximately 6-9 km hiked at a leisurely pace (2-3 km/h) so children and adults alike can participate.

This ninth hike will be a late summer/early autumn hike to explore the following three side trails: part of the Pine River Valley ST, the Carl Alexander ST, and the Melodonna ST.  Please dress appropriately for a late summer/early autumn hike by dressing in layers (wear an inner layer that wicks sweat away from your skin, a middle layer that keeps you warm, and an outer layer that protects you from wind and rain), wearing a sunhat, and wearing comfortable footwear that has good traction.  Hiking poles or walking sticks are an asset since they will help keep you balanced if the ground is muddy/slippery.    As well, make sure you bring enough water and food for a 3-4 hour hike since we’ll be covering a total distance of approximately 7.7 km.

Hopefully you’ll be able to join me on Sunday, September 29th!  Until then, happy hiking, everyone!
