Since 1995, the government in Canada officially recognized February as Black History Month; a time when Canadians are invited to reflect, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination. You will find out about some of those who fought enslavement, and how they were pivotal in shaping our society to be as diverse as it is today. *Dress for the weather. Icers are required. Hiking poles are recommended. We will stop several times at points of interest. Expect hike to take from 1.5-2 hours. Hike 3 of 4 hikes in this series for the Black History badge. PLEASE NOTE: Hikes are offered by volunteers who have committed to their own learning to be able to offer informative and contemplative hike experiences. These hikes are open to all and offered in a spirit of mutual leaning and inclusion.

View ancient geological formations and fossils dating back millions of years, while hiking along the turbulent rapids of the Niagara River. This is a strenuous hike and there is a chance hikers will get wet. Depending on weather conditions, bring water, a snack, icers, gaiters and hiking poles, if necessary. Dress in layers. 🙂

Distance: Varies depending on day: 7km with optional 9 km hike along the Merritt Trail afterwards Description Day 1 Port Dalhousie loop (~7 km *+ 9 km optional Merritt trail) This hike series begins with a loop near the original entrance to the Welland Canal (the First, Second and Third versions). When the Fourth Welland Canal was built, the entry point was changed to Port Weller, thus making a new, more direct route to Port Colborne and Lake Erie. This is Hike #4 of the Welland Canal Badge. Park at Port Dalhousie Public Parking lot. Free parking in the off season. Distance: 8.5 km for first hike, 9 km for second hike Description Day 2: Woodend to Museum and back (8.5 km return), then drive to Sobeys off Glendale Ave and walk along Canal 2 to Richard Pierpoint Park and back (9 km return). The first hike will take you past both the Third and the Present Welland Canal. We will also visit the Welland Canal Museum for a more complete picture of the history of the canal system. This is Hike #2 of the Welland Canal Badge. The second hike will take you along parts of the Merritt Trail where the first Welland Canal followed. Unfortunately, there is little left of the first canal but many sections of the Second Welland Canal are quite visible here because it followed much the same route as the first one. This is Hike #3 of the Welland Canal Badge.

We’ll draw from our collective experiences and founded research to learn from one another about good hiking pole etiquette. The session will conclude with a fun game – the winner will go home with a free pair of Cascade Mountain Trek Hiking Poles. We are working to identify barriers to members participating in group hikes, barriers to non-members engaging with the club, and barriers to volunteers becoming hike leaders. We are also exploring proactive ways to offer hikes and join events that help connect more community members to the trail. We invite you to join us to learn more or contribute ideas.
