  • General Hike Caledon Hills – Exploring the changes from Mono Centre

    Location (Google Maps): Caledon Hills Section, Maps 18, 19. Meet at Hikers parking at Mono Community Centre in the village of Mono Centre on Mono Centre Road. Directions: From Orangeville, take HWY 10 north, turn right (east) on Mono Centre Road CR8, follow until you see the community centre parking lot on the right.

    Description

    We will hike south from Mono Centre to explore the north end of the re-route of the Caledon Hills main trail, as well as Springwater and Turnbull Side Trails. Highlights are beech, maple, ironwood and cedar trees plus stream crossings and a great view.  Hiking boots and poles recommended. Please bring lots of water and snacks. No dogs, please.

    Location (Google Maps): Dufferin Hi-Land Section, Map 20. Meet at roadside parking at intersection of Prince of Wales Rd and 15 Sideroad (Km 37.7) at 9:30 am. Note: Access 15 Sideroad from River Rd only. All other routes involve roads that are not maintained. Car pool option available from SuperBurger (intersection of Hwy 10 and Hwy 89) – meet at 9:15 am.

    Distance: Longer Hike: 7.6 km; Shorter Hike: 3.6 km

    Description

    We will hike loops of the Main Trail and Pine River Valley and Carl Alexander Side Trails, all located within the newly created Pine River Nature Reserve. The two side trails don’t appear on Map 20 of the Bruce Trail Guide, but you can find the Pine River Valley ST in the Bruce Trail Updates: Changes and Notices section of the BTC website (https://brucetrail.org/bruce-trail-sections-and-maps/). The Carl Alexander Side Trail, which just opened in August is located just north of the Pine River Valley Side Trail.

    Location (Google Maps): Dufferin Hi-Land Section, Map 20. Meet at Centre Rd roadside parking, just south of River Rd (Km 34.9). Suggest coming via Prince of Wales Rd, north from intersection of Hwys 10 and 89 to River Rd, then right (east) to Centre Rd. Centre Rd south of River Rd is steep and poorly maintained.

    Description

    We will explore new and recent side trail additions in and around the recently created Pine River Nature Reserve, including the Pine River Valley (recent), Carl Alexander (new), Melodonna and Kilgorie (rerouted) Side Trails. Highlights include the scenic Pine River, ruins of an old power station, great views and lots of shady forest if the weather is still hot. Bring sturdy footwear, lots of water, snacks and lunch. Expect hills and you won’t be disappointed!

    Description

    Beginning at Scottsdale Farm, we will hike 1.3 km south along the main trail to hwy 7. We will cross hwy 7 and follow the Duff Pit Sidetrail (3.8 km), and return. For a shorter hike, turn around at Hwy 7. Carpooling option-meet at Party City in Orangeville at 8:45.

    Location (Google Maps): Beaver Valley Section Map 25 We will meet at the SuperBurger parking lot ( north-west corner of Hwy 89/Hwy 10 intersection) for car pooling at 8:30 am. Max. 4 per car. Masks required in the cars. Otherwise meet at the parking area at Km 27.9, 100 metres south of where the Main Trail crosses the 10th Line on the east side for a 9:30 am start.

    Description

    We will hike through the Duncan Cave Provincial Nature Reserve and the Chuck Grant Side Trail/Main Trail Loop. Short hike will end at parking area at Km 33.3 – shuttle back to Metcalfe Rock parking.

    Bring lunch, water and snacks.
