(at km 67.8), we walk quietly south on the Bruce Trail through a pleasant re-forested area (and memorable benches) then on to the forests of the Hockley Valley Provincial Nature Reserve. We continue south to the junction with the Isabel East Side Trail before heading back north to follow the Cam Snell Side Trail, enjoying the company of a stream. Key words for this walk — forest, stream and some long, steepish sections. Walkers are encouraged to take the steepish sections at their own pace – some may prefer to maintain a steady pace drinking in the forest air and some may prefer to pause for breaths and absorb nature. Please bring water and a snack for on the trail. Hiking poles can be helpful. Optional local lunch gathering after the walk.

Saturday Shorts, a hiking series, will get you out in a small group on a short hike. This Saturday’s hike mainly uses Bruce Trail side trails to explore Riverside Woods Nature Reserve. Depending on trail conditions, we’ll hike for between 4 and 5 km. Please dress for the weather. Icers and hiking poles are recommended. However, we’ll be taking a shorter and gentler route if the trails are snowy and/or icy. Bring water and a snack, if desired. There will be a short break. No dogs please.

Heather Murch and Steven White are co-leading these hikes. Strong hikers are welcome to join for sections or individual hikes, but will need to register for each end to end section series. This series of hikes are 20-24 kms per day and due to parking or hike length, some hikes cover more than one section. Note we start our series through Short Hills Provincial Park due to park restrictions for hunting. We meet at 7:30 – hikers should be ready to shuttle at that time. We will take turns and everyone is expected to participate in the shuttling. Any parking costs will be shared. There is another End to End hike series posted by Steven for those who want to hike and receive a special Stained Glass badge. Hikers should wear layered clothing, bring rainwear, poles, hiking boots, hat, water, snacks, lunch, bug spray, sunblock and be prepared for changing weather this time of year. The hike will start on the farm lane heading past the heritage buildings and barn at Scotsdale Farm. Most of the hike will be in the forest, at times following the edge of the escarpment with a few ups and downs and rocky sections. There will be stops for water. To avoid getting chilled, we will take a couple of shorter nutrition breaks along the way, so bring your favorite hiking drink and snacks. Please dress appropriately for weather conditions. Hiking boots required, poles recommended.

From Highway 401 West, turn right (north) on Guelph Line, right on 10 Side Rd. The road bends northwards and becomes 4th Line Nassagaweya; roadside parking at the bend. This an easy hike along the river and through fields and woods. We can also cross the road and then hike along the Millrace Trail. There are many Chickadees that winter here and are happy to eat seeds right out of your hand. Total: about 7-8 kms We can also walk through the Village that will be well decorated for Christmas. Following the hike, those that are interested, can enjoy lunch at the Harvest Moon Restaurant. RESERVATIONS ARE NEEDED SO PLEASE INDICATE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US FOR LUNCH. The St Jacobs Farmers market , just a few kms up the road, is open from 7:30 AM to 3 PM.
