Please read the hiking guidelines below.

Today’s hike takes us down and into Kimberley village, then up to Old Baldy, as we make our way along the east side of the escarpment to beautiful Eugenia Falls and includes about 3.5 km of road walking.

    Distance: 15.3 km

    Description

Join us for Part IV of the Beaver Valley End to End. Today we’ll be doing a combination of woods, meadows and hills, with some road walking. Please note that we are about 6 km short of  where we planned to be by this point so we will not reach Old Baldy on the 11th. We will do that part of the trail, ending at Eugenia on September 17. This is one of eight hikes that will take in the whole of the Beaver Valley Section of the Bruce Trail. Each will be of 15-16 km in length. They are designed so that anyone of reasonable fitness can complete the End to End and obtain a badge. These will not be fast hikes.

Bring at least two litres of water and your lunch. We’ll be meeting  the bus something after the halfway point so you can leave some or your water on the bus for later pickup. Do not leave your lunch as we’ll be stopping to eat before we see the bus again. Sun protection and insect repellent are recommended at this time of year.

Following the hike we’ll make a roughly forty minute refreshment/washroom stop in Primrose. There are several places to eat at the crossroads.

If you are planning to order an end to end badge for the Beaver Valley Section please type ‘Yes’ in the Additional information Field when you register. I will collect the $5 on the first hike when we resume the series in September.

You can use the hikes in this series to complete the Beaver Valley end to end if you are doing other parts of it by car or with other hike leaders if my dates don’t all work for you. Just make a note of the dates and the km covered for your hiking log to be submitted directly to the Beaver Valley Club.

The remaining four hikes in this series have been scheduled for:

Fletcher’s Creek Preserve is an abandoned quarry site that has been rehabilitated and is located at the headwaters of the Spencer Creek watershed.

We will take the same (and only)  loop hike through the preserve as well as an adjacent trail that was also part of the quarry back in the day-lots of local history- it was the area swimming hole and some still use it.

WATER is a MUST. Strongly suggests bug spray, sun screen, hat, hiking boots, hiking pole, water snack/lunch, cell phone, and appropriate clothing for the weather.

    Description

Welcome to the Saturday Seekers, as we’re calling this series of hikes, since the goal is to earn the BV Green Apple End to End badge!  All hikes in this series will include a car shuttle, masks must be worn in cars, and please be prepared to take a turn as a shuttle driver.  Trails may be wet at this time of year so it’s a good idea to have gaiters handy.  Experience with hiking about 20 km in a day at a medium pace is essential.  There will be a short snack break in the morning and afternoon, as well as a longer lunch break.  Ensure that you have sufficient water. Please read the hiking guidelines below.

Today’s hike takes us from Eugenia Falls to Hogg’s Falls, then up the west side of the valley along the escarpment through the Beaver Valley Ski Club and includes about 3/4’s of a km of road walking.

COVID-19 Precautions Before, During and After your Hike

    1. Each hiker joining a Bruce Trail Club organized hike must perform a self-screening check before hiking.
      Find Ontario’s self-assessment tool here: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/
    2. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, stay home.
    3. Personal Protective Equipment:
      • Hikers may choose to wear masks

    Transportation

It is the Bruce Trail Conservancy’s current policy that car shuttles are allowed.  It is at the discrepancy of individual hike leaders to make that decision.

    Other Guidelines

    1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
    2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
    3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
    4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
    5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
    6. Bring your own first aid kit.
    7. Please leave dogs at home.

TBTC is collaborating with Climate Action for Lifelong Learners (CALL) for a leisurely walk along the Todd Bardes Side Trail, which branches off the main trail near Limehouse. The trail takes us through meadows of prairie grass where a volunteer crew from the Toronto Club has been working to increase biodiversity on the property. It has been replanting wildflowers native to the area, controlling invasive species, planting trees, and erecting birdhouses, bee and butterfly way stations.

Along the way we’ll talk about what an amazing variety of life we can find along the Niagara Escarpment, and learn why biodiversity is so important to the health of the planet. We’ll also meet the members of CALL and hear how they are encouraging each other to be informed on climate issues and to take collective and individual actions. Those who wish can join us for a pub lunch in Georgetown following the hike.

CARPOOLING – We encourage all hikers to consider carpooling, to help nature and fight climate change.  Climate Action for Lifelong Learners (CALL) will facilitate this — click HERE to fill out their carpooling form.  The deadline is midnight on Thursday June 16.  On Friday, June 17 CALL will send all potential carpoolers a list of everyone’s name, phone number and other information. At that point, PASSENGERS will have the responsibility to reach out to DRIVERS to find a seat.

Bring along with you water, sun screen, and insect repellant and wear long pants.

    Pace: Medium – 3 to 4 km/hr
Terrain: Strenuous – Hilly with steep climbs and some poor footing
    Distance: 7km

    Description

We will drive from Collingwood to Lions Head (2hours) and follow Cty Rd 9 to km 67.9 at the junction of the Barrow Bay Side Trail which has now become the white blazed trail after printing edition 30. We follow this NEW trail to a very steep descent down the escarpment to the Georgian Bay shore. We then follow a moderately rugged path just inside the treeline for 2km along an unspoiled rocky shoreline. We then head back up via a steep zig zag among huge boulders until we meet a formerly impassable cliff, now conquered by a spectacular wooden staircase built in 2020 by volunteers from the Peninsula BTC. The trail features cliffs, spectacular lookouts, and dense forests. A long drive home but what a spectacular new section of our fabulous footpath to have experienced. Bring snacks, lunch and water.
