Description

This is an out and back hike during which we walk on traces of the Old Mail Road which was in use from the 1830’s to 1850’s.  We will encounter fields and forests along the way.

  3. Follow the guidelines for safe & responsible hiking
  4. Personal Protective Equipment:
    • Hikers may choose to wear masks
    • Hikers may carry and use hand sanitizer, but should not be sharing it with the group
  5. Hikers who experience COVID-19 symptoms following a Bruce Trail Club organized hike must inform their local public health unit.

Transportation

All hikers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike.

Currently, there are no car shuttles on hikes – all hikes must be out-and-back or loop hikes. No buses are provided at this time.

Other Guidelines

  1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
  2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
    Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
    Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
  5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
  6. Bring your own first aid kit.
  7. Please leave dogs at home.

Description

Join us for a meandering Labour Day Weekend walk from Lawrence Park via a variety of trails and ravines (with a little road walking) that will take us through Sherwood Park, Sunnybrook Park, E.T. Seton Park, Crothers Woods and the Brickworks, to finish at Castle Frank Subway Station. We will follow the trails less well trodden along the Don West Creek and Don River, avoiding the paved routes as much as possible. If there has been heavy rain prior to the walk we may have to alter the route slightly in Crothers Woods to avoid contributing to the erosion problems on the trails there. But lots of nice views and some hills to make it interesting.

An early start to avoid the worst heat of the day.

What you need: Two litres of water, your lunch, bug spray and sun protection and, if the weather is dicey, a waterproof layer. Because there may be mud and there are definitely hills, hiking boots and poles are recommended.

Dropouts: There are several points along the way where you can dropout if you wish to make a shorter walk. I plan to maintain a pace of about 3.5 km per hour.

Description

An enjoyable hike along the white blazed trail through the upper escarpment,
descending to the Standing Rock Side Trail where the trail becomes more challenging and quite the climb.
After enjoying the view of Standing Rock in all its magnificence, we climb up and
over rocks and through cracks and crevices!
Once at the top, we continue on to close the loop before heading back.
Hikers can opt to take the Franks Kiln Side Trail just before you reach the
end of the hike to view a restored lime kiln that was originally built circa 1860.
Bring a snack or lunch and water.

Description

We hike from the GO Station to Hidden Valley Park and through the Hendrie Valley Sanctuary of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Due to the bridge still being out at Valley Inn Road we walk uphill beside the RBG Laking Garden to Plains Road and follow along the top of Burlington Heights with views over the the valley and Hamilton. We then hike on the Hamilton Waterfront Trail  to finish the hike near the West Harbour GO Station. Return to the start or Toronto by GO Train (7 day/week service now available from this station). Mostly flat easy walking except the one hill. Optional refreshment stop at cafe or pub.

$10 GO Transit Day Pass available on smartphones or can be purchased at Union Station from hike leader morning of the hike. We will take the 8:51 Niagara express train from Union Station arriving at Aldershot 9:39 AM. Anyone departing from west end of Toronto by train can take the local train departing Long Branch Station at 9:06 AM arriving at 9:50 AM.

Celebrate Labour Day with a lovely loop hike in the Dundas Valley. We take in part of the Bruce Trail and several DVCA trails.  Lots of waterfalls like Sherman, Canterbury, and Cascade. Description

Rescheduled hike, come and enjoy the Credit River and beautiful tranquil Riverwood Conservancy in the twilight hours as we do a there and back hike along the Culham trail to historic Streetsville, a village founded by Timothy Street in 1824, a town within a city that still retains the charms of a village. Nestled on the banks of the Credit River, Streetsville is home to the largest number of historic buildings in the city of Mississauga. Part of the route will be along an abandoned rail line from the old Barber woolen mill in Barbertown to the outskirts of Streetsville. A 20 minute rest stop in the Village Square with Murphy’s Ice Cream Parlour to tempt us and a washroom available to us from one of the eateries and nearby Starbucks before we make our way back in the waning light. Sunset will be at 7:45 pm. Bring flashlights or use the torch on your cell phones. We will finish on flatter wider trails if need be. Safety is always number one priority.

This is the second of a three hike series for a BADGE. Please make sure you know there is no dropout part way through the hike. We will park at Devil’s Glen Provincial Park parking lot off of Cty. Rd. 124.
We will follow the white blazed trail down the stairs to the Devil’s Glen Ski Club, cross the bridge and
continue up the steep slippery slope until you reach Side Road 15/16 Nottawasaga.
Here the Bruce Trail and the Ganaraska Trail meet.
Touch the boulder displaying the Ganaraska sign.
We will then retrace our steps on the white blazed trail.
Bring snacks/lunch and water.

Description

The villages of Unionville & Markham are connected by the Rouge Valley Trail System following the Rouge River and running behind the historic buildings on Main Street Unionville, by Waldon Pond in Austin Drive Park, through Milne Dam Conservation Area, and ending with a 143 metre long suspension bridge over the dam. We will walk into the village of Markham and finish with a short boardwalk trail through Tannery Pond which is close to the Markham GO Station. We begin the hike at Unionville GO Station hiking north to the historic Main Street and picking up the Rouge Valley Trail at Carlton Road. Optional stop at the Rouge River Brewing Company or local pub. Return to Toronto or the starting point by GO Train or  York Region Transit bus.

Terrain is easy, mostly paved path/boardwalk with some dirt trails.

We will hike a there and back along a pristine and very scenic section of Culham Trail from Streetsville’s Memorial Park to secret Credit Meadows Park with its own groomed grass trails and our hidden lunch spot in the woods by the Credit River.

Washrooms at our meeting spot as well as at River Grove Park at 2 km and 10.5 km. Nature stop near our lunch stop at 6.3 km.

The is a fairly easy hike with only one major hill. We will be walking on packed gravel, dirt and grass trails as well as a short section of paved trail near River Grove Park.

    Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
  5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
  6. Bring your own first aid kit.

Description

This is the first in a series of hikes to complete the Secrets of Sydenham Badge. We will do the hikes in order, as weather and hiking conditions allow.  Come for the whole series or just the ones you couldn’t find. Unfortunately, the number of hikers is limited on many of the hikes due to lack of parking. Each hike will take about 2 hours, including time spent searching for the hidden plaque. If you need a copy of Ron Savage’s Secrets of Sydenham book, I will have books for sale ($20, all proceeds to BTC). The book features 45 Sydenham nature reserves (properties owned by BTC) and includes interesting stories and historical information about the properties. This first hike is an in and out hike at a medium pace.  We will pass the new Rocklyn Creek bridge, built by the Canadian 32nd Combat Engineer Regiment. There is a steep climb up the escarpment and a steep descent, in each direction.

This is the third and final hike in a series for a BADGE. Please make sure you know there is no dropout part way through the hike. We will park at the side of the road at the Noisy River Provincial Park on Cty Rd. 9.
We will descend into the park crossing the Noisy River before ascending to Concession 9 Nottawasaga Rd. S.
At this point, we will turn around and hike back to County Rd 9.
This 2km stretch will be repeated two more times for a total of 6 kms.
This is a hilly hike, so bring lots of water and lunch. The Noisy Triple, a fitting end to the Rim 2 Rim Triple Run.

Join me for a relaxed walk from Guildwood GO Station along the trails following Highland Creek and down to the waterfront. We’ll walk eastward along the lakeshore to the Rouge Hill GO Station where we will finish the walk. The walk is largely shaded except for the last portion along the lakefront.

An early start to avoid the worst heat of the day.

Getting to the start Point:

GO Transit: Eastbound GO trains leave Union Station at 7:35 and 8:05, arriving at Guildwood at 8:02 and 8:32 depending on how early you want to be.

TTC: Route 86 departs Kennedy Subway Station every 20 minutes, about a 17 minute ride to the Celeste Dr stop.

Washrooms: Guildwood GO, Colonel Danforth Park, Rouge Hill GO.

What you need: 2 litres of water, snacks, sun protection.

Heading Home:

A westbound train leaves Rouge Hill Station every 30 minutes (4 and 34 minutes past the hour). This will take you towards downtown with several stops along the route, including Guildwood if you left your car there. It connects with the subway at Danforth GO (5 minute walk) and Union Station.

TTC route 38 departs Rouge Hill Station every 12 minutes or so, connecting with the Scarborough LRT at Scarborough Centre Station, which will connect you to the Bloor/Danforth Subway line. This is a very slow option to return west.

Special Note: If everyone registered for the hike arrives before 8:45 we will depart earlier than planned. But we won’t start any later than 8:45.

 

Also, if the weather is( fine and people are feeling energetic we will do an additional 3 km (1.5 km each direction) to Rouge Beach and the lookout on the east side of the Rouge River. We will be passing the Rouge Hill GO so you can drop out if you don’t want to do the extra.

Description

We will hike a 3km loop through Rogers Reservoir Conservation Area returning to the GO Station and then hike south to Fairy Lake and  historic Main Street in Newmarket. In the Conservation Are we will pass the remains of the swing railway bridge, a new boardwalk/bridge, remains of an abandoned canal, and a diverse landscape. The walking is easy south to Fairy Lake where we loop around the lake with a scenic boardwalk trail on the east side and paved path leading into the historic downtown of Newmarket. If time permits we may stop for an ice cream or a butter tart before hiking to the Newmarket GO Station at the north end of town to get the train toward Toronto Union at 2:49 PM.

Description

Looking for a distance and strength challenge?

Climb up and down approximately 2,000 steps of the escarpment stairs and hike over 20 kilometres in the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club’s annual Steeltown Stomp.

This is a self-guided hike along the Bruce Trail, the Escarpment Rail Trail and the Chedoke Radial Trail, and climbing up and down 7 sets of stairs along the Hamilton Escarpment (Uli – 140, Margate – 159, Kimberley – 228, Wentworth – 500, James – 232, Dundurn – 329, Chedoke – 289).

Everyone who completes the route and goes through the two checkpoints will earn the Steeltown Stomp badge.

Please Note: This is an arduous hike because of the stair climbing required. Also, for those that have done the Steeltown Stomp before, note that we have changed the starting point and the direction this year.

Fee: $25 includes checkpoints, badge and helps to support the Bruce Trail Conservancy in its mission to preserve a ribbon of wilderness, for everyone, forever.

Check in: At the registration booth set up at the north end of the parking lot of the Mohawk 4 Ice Centre.  We have set up staggered start times to help ensure social distancing – choose 8:00, 8:15, 8:30 or 8:45 when you register and you will start the hike as you are checked in. This is not a race and you will not be timed.

Checkpoints: Start and end at the Mohawk 4 Ice Centre. There is a second turnaround checkpoint at the Chedoke Golf Course.

Route: Follow the yellow blazes…special yellow blazes will be set up to mark the route. In addition, the route has been set up on the AllTrails app – if you have this downloaded on your phone, you can follow the route using the app. Outbound RouteInbound route

What to bring: Bring your own water and snacks. Wear comfortable sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Protect yourself from insects and sun. Although water will be available at the public water fountains, you will need to bring your own water bottle.

What if it rains? This is a rain or shine event.

What if I need to drop out? As we are in an urban area, there are places to meet a taxi or a ride along the way. This must be arranged by you, the participant. If you have to drop out, please let us know.

Description

Start training now for our upcoming fun-filled Prediction Hike Fundraiser. Hikers will choose to complete one of two predetermined hikes, a distance of 7 km or 20 km, and upon registration will provide their “to-the-second” prediction of how long it will take to complete the distance on event day.

Of course there is a catch. NO time, pace, and/or distance technology can be used during the actual event. The hiker in each hike distance category with the closest prediction to his/her actual time will be awarded a fabulous prize. Everyone will receive a spectacular souvenir badge.

Participant start times will vary between 8:30 am and 9:30 am, based on predicted finish times. Individuals and groups will be notified about their scheduled start times.

The hikes are self-supporting, so bring plenty of snacks and beverages. Light refreshments will be served at the finish line. All profits will be donated to the Caledon Hills Bruce Trail Club.

Transportation

All hikers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike.

Currently, there are no car shuttles on hikes – all hikes must be out-and-back or loop hikes.

  2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
    Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
    Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.

September is a great time to see hawks, eagles, vultures, and other migratories like flocks of blue jays, shorebirds, and waterfowl along Lake Ontario. Bring your field glasses for this unhasty, easy-going jaunt. Our walk will take us along the top of the Scarborough Bluffs to Sylvan Park and then down the Doris McCarthy Trail to the lakeshore. We will walk to the ravine at the Guild Inn, stopping to observe the birdlife along the Bluffs. At the end of the walk, we can visit the Guild Inn gardens and Guildwood Village.

Eastbound GO trains leave Union Station at 8:05 and 8:35 a.m. to arrive at Guildwood at 8:32 and 9:02. Or a Scarborough East TTC bus 86 departs from Kennedy Subway station every 20 minutes. If everyone registered for the hike arrives before 9:30, we will depart earlier than planned. In the afternoon,westbound GO trains to return us downtown leave every 30 minutes.

Come join us as we explore the streetscapes of a pioneer village seemingly frozen in time, protected by a river but significantly impacted by the growing city around it . In 1980 Meadowvale Village was designated as Ontario’s first Heritage Conservation District. During the tour we will visit author and retired history teacher, Terry Wilson, who will guide us through his replica miniature village, a labor of love for place where he grew up and for all that has been lost. The hike will be in two parts totaling 10.5 km with an additional 1.4 km hike in and out for transit users. Part 1 (6.4 km) starting form the Credit Valley Conservation Authority parking we will hike part of the Glassford Trail within the Meadowvale Conservation Area and work our way East to the Old Village. After visiting Terry Wilson we will meander through the village and stop for lunch near the Rotherglen private school, formerly the Gooderham Estate (c 1870). Completing Part 1 we will walk West along Old Derry Road, visit the ruins of the old mill and return to the Conservation Area and CVCA parking drop out. Part 2 (4.1 km) we will continue Westward to pick up the pretty Levi Creek trail that affords us a loop by way of Samuelson Park and Circle trail partly along the former Guelph Suburban Radial Railway Line (1917-1931) and Meadowvale Conservation area back to our starting point. Fletcher Flats will not be part of this hike but will be featured in another upcoming Credit River Hike.

Public Washrooms inside the Conservation Area grounds that we can access before and after our Village tour. Please bring minimum 1.5 L of water, a lunch or snacks, insect repellant and wear long pants.

Follow Glasgow around the bend to parking on your left at Dick’s Dam Park. Alternate route is to take Hwy 427 north to where it ends at Hwy 7. Turn left on Hwy 7 and then in about one km turn right on Hwy 50. Follow for 14 km to Bolton.
