  2. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, stay home.
  3. Personal Protective Equipment:
    • Hikers may choose to wear masks
    • Hikers may carry and use hand sanitizer, but should not be sharing it with the group
  4. Hikers who experience COVID-19 symptoms following a Bruce Trail Club organized hike must inform their local public health unit.

Transportation

All hikers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike.

Currently, there are no car shuttles on hikes – all hikes must be out-and-back or loop hikes.

Other Guidelines

  1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
  2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
    Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
    Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
  5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
  6. Bring your own first aid kit.
  7. Please leave dogs at home.

Loop Hike  – From the parking lot at Felker’s Falls Conservation Area in Hamilton,  we will hike the main trail and Mohawk Side Trail and Mountain Brow Side Trail to make a 12 km loop. Along the way we will pass Felker’s Falls, Buttermilk Falls and Albion Falls. We may include part of the Red Hill Valley Trail as well,.

Description

We will park at km 67.5 on the Lower Valley Road. We will begin hiking on the
Hoggs Falls Lower Side Trail before joining up with the white blazed trail and continuing north.
Upon meeting up with the Hoggs Falls Upper Side Trail, we will hike west to form a loop back to the cars.
The trail leads through forests, climbs out of the creek valley and follows along the edge of an open field
before dropping down again onto an old logging road and into the beginning of a wide valley.
Bring a snack or lunch and water.

Description

The Pacific Slope Trail (Sendero Pacífico) Friendship Trail follows the Bruce Trail starting at Hoggs Falls (km 68).
This is a very strenuous hike. We make a steady climb as we go up and down several times before veering off onto the Stew Hilts Side Trail
all the while taking in a portion of the Beaver Valley’s beautiful Falling Waters landscape.
**The Pacific Slope Trail (Sendero Pacífico, Costa Rica) section is twinned with the Bruce Trail.
It begins in San Luis in the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest conservation region, and leads into the Children’s Eternal Rainforest

Description

This short hike starts at the top of the escarpment at Kelso Summit, off of Steeles Avenue, between Appleby Line and Bell School Line.. It gives a lot of “bang for your buck” with spectacular views from the escarpment looking over Quarry Park as well as Kelso Lake. We will use a combination of blue and white trails to explore the area including the Lime Kilns located here. Expect some rocky areas and at least one hill down and then back up. You will need to reserve a spot to park here. Reserve a three hour spot or two back to back. Bring water, a snack, sunscreen, insect repellent and poles if using. Covid protocols in place.

The hike will begin at the Fairmount Side Trail and form a loop taking in both the Siegerman Side Trail and the Allan Side Trail.
This 3.5 hour hike has a relaxing start past magnificent Webwood Falls.
Some road hiking turns into a steep descent to Joe Pye Weed stream.
A couple of very long strenuous uphill climbs makes this a challenging hike.

We park at km 94.9 on Sideroad 19 west of County Road 7.
We begin hiking south to km 91.9 meeting up with the Sligo Side Trail.
Following the Sligo Side Trail, we will loop around and meet up with the white blazed trail and retrace our steps back to the cars.
The trail meanders through varied wilderness terrain that includes wetlands, a beaver pond, and the Beaverdale Forest Area.

When the sign Eldred King Woodlands appears turn unto the gravel roadway and follow it to the parking lot. Parking is free and there are security guards until closing time.
I urge everyone doing this hike to arrive at least 15 mins before departure time so we can start on time.
We start the hike early (8:00 a.m.) to beat the heat. Walk with your hiking essentials including at least 2 litres of water, and a light lunch. Dress for the weather.

Description

We will be hiking north along the Culham trail form Erindale Park as far as Eglington Ave and returning by way of Leslie Log House, Mullet Creek, Trapper’s Green, and Sawmill Valley Trail to UTM, finishing our scenic loop back at our starting point. This is mostly a flat hike with 3 hills and a few rocky sections where you have to watch your footing. Mostly it is smooth sailing. Our lunch stop will be on the grounds of Leslie Log House at the 7.6 km mark. Water fountain and public washrooms at Erindale Park only, nature stop prior to our lunch break. There should be an ice cream vendor waiting for us in Erindale Park on our return.

From Highway 401 go north on Trafalgar Rd. until it merges with Highway 7, turn left on Highway 7, after about 4 km Trafalgar Rd. will branch-out to the right, take Trafalgar Rd., entrance to Scotsdale Farm is on the right after about 1.5 km. An unpaved road leads to the parking on the left.

Description

Meet at 9:15 for a 9:30 departure at the NW parking lot to Island Lake Conservation Area. The parking lot entrance is on the south side of Hockley Road 370 meters east of the stoplight on Highway 10 at Hockley Road a.k.a. County Road 16 and opposite Mono-Amaranth Public School.  Parking is limited to about 20 cars so earlier or pooling is advised.

This is a very pleasant and beautiful circular walk along the boardwalks through marshes, forests and over islands. And perfect for conditioning after the lock down. There are two washroom facilities on the route but no water.

The RBG Hendrie Valley is lush and green and full of life with birds. wildfowl, squirrels, chipmunks, fish, frogs and turtles. We will meet in the parking lot of Hidden Valley Park at the corner of Hidden Valley Rd. and Lemonville Rd. From there we will follow the trail to Unsworth St. and from there Creekside Trail leading into Hendrie Valley and all the way to Grindstone Creek Marsh and back again. Description

We begin with an incline up an unopened road allowance. Then we will loop through varied forest using the Allan Side Trail. As we return via the Siegerman Side Trail, we will be walking along a beautiful stream. Please bring adequate water and a snack.

Transportation

All hikers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike.

Currently, there are no car shuttles on hikes – all hikes must be out-and-back or loop hikes.

Other Guidelines

  1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
  2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
    Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
    Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
  5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
  6. Bring your own first aid kit.
  7. Please leave dogs at home.

Description

We start this brisk hike with a strenuous uphill climb on St Vincent-Sydenham Townline – to get the blood pumping! Then we turn into the woods and take the trail east through a pretty mix of forest and fields to Grey Road 29. We head south briefly, then take the Walter’s Falls side trail along the east side of the creek valley, then cross over the bridge at the Walter’s Fall Inn and follow the creek along its west bank and back to Road 29. We will cross the road and hike through a pleasant forest and back over Walter’s Creek where it passes the closed section of the Holland Sydenham Townline. We then re-trace our steps through the Walter’s Falls Management Area to the parking.

Description

A short 7 minute bus ride from the Whitby GO Station we will explore the trails of beautiful Lynde Shores Conservation Area where birds and wildlife are regularly spotted. We pass through the bird feeder trail, two marshes and the Lake Ontario Shoreline. Option to visit the tap room of Town Brewery craft brewery before returning to the GO Station.

Surfaces include pavement, rocks, some sand and gravel/dirt trails. One small step down to the beach. Hiking Boots and long (or zip-off) pants recommended.

This is a 9km intermediate nature hike along the Bruce Trail through forest and meadows, with a couple of nice vista look outs along the way.
We will take a 5-10 minute break at Smokey Hollow (which is the halfway point).
Some rugged/rocky areas. One incline at the beginning of the hike and one at the halfway point upon our return.
We will encounter 2 stiles (ladders), each way, which we will be required to climb over.
Wear appropriate quick-dry, cool clothing and hiking shoes/boots.
Bring sunscreen, a sun hat, insect repellent, snacks, 1-2 litres of water, a personal first aid kit, hand sanitizer and a face mask.
Please register at least 12 hours prior to hike start time. Sometimes last minute changes are made to hikes; registering means we will be able to contact you to communicate any changes to the schedule.  For driving directions, copy and paste the GPS coordinates into a Google search window or read the directions supplied here.
Please arrive 15 minutes early. If you are unable to attend, please email me at least 2 hours before the start of the hike, or text me if it is less than 2 hours before the hike.

Description

Our hike takes us past the impressive Pinnacle Rock and by the beautiful Mill Creek. We’ll have a few interesting views of deep crevices and a wide view back to Metcalfe Rock. We follow the Chuck Grant Side Trail to make a loop. As we near our starting location, an optional route through the awe-inspiring Metcalfe Rock Side Trail is a great way to bring our hike to a close. Please bring adequate water and a snack.

Transportation

All hikers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike.

Currently, there are no car shuttles on hikes – all hikes must be out-and-back or loop hikes.

  1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
  2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
    Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
    Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
  5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
  6. Bring your own first aid kit.
  7. Please leave dogs at home.

We will park at the top of the hill on
St Vincent-Sydenham Townline we turn into the woods and take the trail through a pretty mix of forest and fields to Grey Road 29. We head south briefly, then take the Walter’s Falls side trail along the east side of the creek valley, then cross over the bridge at the Walter’s Fall Inn and follow the creek along its west bank and back to Road 29. We will cross the road and hike through a pleasant forest and back over Walter’s Creek where it passes the closed section of the Holland Sydenham Townline. We then re-trace our steps through the Walter’s Falls Management Area to the parking.

We will explore quiet trails along the West Don River into some of the least-known woods in the city. We will pass through York Cemetery to Gwendolyn Park and Earl Bales Park and the Hinder Property. Looping through the West Don Parkland, we return via the Hinder Property and Burnett Park to Mel Lastman Square. Some steep descents and climbs, so walking poles are highly recommended. It can be buggy along the Hydro Corridor.  Bring spray, sunscreen if it is a bright day, and snacks and drinking water.

From there, we will follow our child’s lead – some of the little ones may wish to do a little hike (certainly, following ones’ peers can be motivating!) while others may choose to remind us that there are plenty of leaves and rocks and little creatures to observe without going very far at all.

Bring water, snacks (of course!  when was the last time you went anywhere without snacks?!), sunscreen, insect spray, appropriate clothing & footwear.  Suggested but optional enrichment materials: paper + crayons for rubbing art, magnifying glass, binoculars.

This is a loop hike with an extension north to view Bill’s Creek and Karst topography.  We start at the ski club and head north on the Kimberley Side Trail up to Biil’s Creek then return on the main trail south to the Valley Crossover Trail and back to our cars.

This is a strenuous hike and for experienced hikers. After leaving cars at the Gibraltar Sideroad 6 parking lot, we will follow the John
Haigh Side Trail past the highest point on the Bruce Trail until it joins the white blazed trail.
We will continue to follow the white blazed trail south across the Pretty River Road, across 30/31
Sideroad Nottawasaga and then up the hill to the Standing Rock and Caves Side Trail leading to
the Singhampton Caves in the Nottawasaga Lookout Nature Reserve.
After a scramble through the caves and a climb back up to the white blazed trail, we will loop back around and down on
the white blazed trail. This is one hike in a series if three to earn a badge.
Bring lots of snacks, lunch and water.

We start our morning with a welcome and introduction to Rural Rootz Nature Reserve from Dee and Tom Ashman. Learn about the Rural Rootz gardens and trails, as well as the healing therapies offered by Dee and Tom. After we say goodbye to Dee and Tom, we hike Rural Rocks Side Trail, the only “satellite trail” of the entire Bruce Trail. The pace will be leisurely over rugged walking terrain. The hike will finish about 12:30. If you still have time after the hike, explore the gentle gardens and labyrinths which Tom and Dee have created here. Description

We will hike northwest through the Anita Dutka-Buchin Nature Sanctuary, to Old Waterdown Road meeting the Norman Pearson Side Trail which descends the escarpment to the Grindstone Creek Valley meeting the main Bruce Trail at km 71.6. The trail climbs the valley slopes through Smokey Hollow eventually leading to steps ascending to the lookout over Great Falls (or Smokey Hollow Falls) at km 72.4. We will hike into the village of Waterdown where there will be the opportunity to stop at the Copper Kettle for apple fritters. Our return will be on the Bruce Trail and the McNally Side Trail (km 73.2) completing the Great Falls loop and then back to Old Waterdown Road following an alternate trail southeast through the nature sanctuary to Aldershot station.

Hiking boots required, trekking poles are optional.  Some steep hills and steps. Bring at least 2 liters of water, bug spray, sunscreen and a lunch.

This hike will be transit accessible by GO Transit. The Lakeshore West Train departs Union Station at 8:15 am and arrives at Aldershot Station at 9:20 am. GO Transit is offering a weekend day-pass for $10 if purchased on a smart phone (not available at the stations). If you don’t have a smart phone the pass can be purchased from the hike leader at Union Station. Those wishing to travel together Meet at Union Station before 8:00 by the clock under the information desk in the Great Hall.

Direction: From Highway 401, go north on Road 25, turn left on 5 Sideroad, it will become Campbellville Rd. Continue on it, turn right on 6th Line Nassagaweya, parking is on the left, somewhat hidden, so keep looking for it as you drive. Parking there is limited, will use roadside parking nearby in case overflow.
In case, parking is full, we may move to Guelph Line north, 10 Sideroad right, where it connects with 4th Line Nassagaweya. This to be decided when we are there (usually early comers are fine).

Transportation

All hikers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike.

Currently, there are no car shuttles on hikes – all hikes must be out-and-back or loop hikes. No buses are provided at this time.

Other Guidelines

  1. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
  2. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
    Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
    Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  4. Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
  5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
  6. Bring your own first aid kit.
  7. Please leave dogs at home.

Beaver Valley Loop Hike – Starting from the off road parking area on  the north side of Sideroad 7A, at the top of the hill; we will hike the main trail for 5.1 km  to where the main trail meets Mary B’s Lane and the Valley Crossover trail. We will hike this side trail until it meets the Kimberly Forest side trail. Then we hike this side trail until it meets the main trail again after 2.5 km. Then hike the main trail back to the parking area.
