COVID-19 Precautions Before, During and After your Hike
- Each hiker joining a Bruce Trail Club organized hike must perform a self-screening check before hiking.
Find Ontario's self-assessment tool here: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/
- If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, stay home.
- Personal Protective Equipment:
- Hikers may choose to wear masks
- Hikers may carry and use hand sanitizer, but should not be sharing it with the group
- Hikers who experience COVID-19 symptoms following a Bruce Trail Club organized hike must inform their local public health unit.
Find your local health unit at http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/common/system/services/phu/locations.aspx
Transportation
All hikers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike.
Currently, there are no car shuttles on hikes – all hikes must be out-and-back or loop hikes.
Other Guidelines
- Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
- Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain.
Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate.
Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
- Always carry I.D. and your health card.
- Bring sufficient water and snacks (or lunch if indicated). A minimum of 1L of water is recommended on all hikes, and 3L is recommended for long, challenging hikes in the heat of the summer.
- Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (for spring and summer hikes).
- Bring your own first aid kit.
- Please leave dogs at home.

We start this brisk hike with a strenuous uphill climb on St Vincent-Sydenham Townline - to get the blood pumping! Then we turn into the woods and take the trail east through a pretty mix of forest and fields to Grey Road 29. We head south briefly, then take the Walter's Falls side trail along the east side of the creek valley, then cross over the bridge at the Walter's Fall Inn and follow the creek along its west bank and back to Road 29. We will cross the road and hike through a pleasant forest and back over Walter's Creek where it passes the closed section of the Holland Sydenham Townline. We then re-trace our steps through the Walter's Falls Management Area to the parking.

For the littlest hikers & hikers in training, geared towards ages 5 and under (not a hard limit) - we will meet at the south end of the second parking lot from the main entrance at 650 Governors Road (See purple "X" on attached map). We will walk up to explore the train cars at the train station (Trail Centre).
From there, we will follow our child's lead - some of the little ones may wish to do a little hike (certainly, following ones' peers can be motivating!) while others may choose to remind us that there are plenty of leaves and rocks and little creatures to observe without going very far at all.
Bring water, snacks (of course! when was the last time you went anywhere without snacks?!), sunscreen, insect spray, appropriate clothing & footwear. Suggested but optional enrichment materials: paper + crayons for rubbing art, magnifying glass, binoculars.

After we say goodbye to Dee and Tom, we hike Rural Rocks Side Trail, the only “satellite trail” of the entire Bruce Trail. The pace will be leisurely over rugged walking terrain. The hike will finish about 12:30. If you still have time after the hike, explore the gentle gardens and labyrinths which Tom and Dee have created here. Bring a lunch if you would like to linger a little longer at Rural Rootz Nature Reserve. For more information about Rural Rootz: https://www.ruralrootz.com/

- Follow the guidelines for safe & responsible hiking
No buses are provided at this time.
