Walk for Health and Fun – West Hamilton

Description

Climb the steps and walk the streets and trails of West Hamilton. We will hike sections of the Bruce Trail as well as the trails of Iroquoia Heights. There will be weekly walks all summer. Now we are all getting older we are not hiking as fast as we used to. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain.

Terrain includes challenging ascents and descents, roots, rocks, boulder beaches and beautiful scenery. You must be an experienced hiker in good
condition with proper hiking footwear. Hiking poles are recommended.
Two nights accommodation as well as six meals have been arranged in Tobermory from Wednesday, September 19 to September 21, 2019.

We will carpool to the Loree Forest entrance pathway on the
21st Sideroad in the Beaver Valley section. We will walk north to
join the main trail, then continue to do a loop hike, with great
views, returning by the entrance pathway to the start point.

Description

This is a loop hike using the Mac Kirk Side Trail plus main trail.  Ridgetop views of Kimberley Valley from Old Baldy lookout. Bring water, snacks.

Participant Guidelines

  1. All kms. mentioned are according to maps in Edition 29 of The Bruce Trail Reference.
  2. Please arrive 10 minutes before start of hike.
  3. Participants are expected to wear appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain. In summer, sturdy footwear is necessary. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate. It is a good idea to bring these items if there is snow on the ground and the hike leader will advise you as to the best footwear for the day. Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  4. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  5. For spring and summer hikes bring sunscreen, insect repellent and water.
  6. Please leave dogs at home.

Description

Come and enjoy this beautiful conservation area with its perfect views and spectacular cliffs. This is escarpment at its best. We will hike north, go down into the canyon, hike south and then ascend out of the canyon back to Rattlesnake. There is one long, steepish hill to go down and a long, but gentle hill to go back up. If you come to the main entrance to the DVCA area on Hwy 99 you have gone too far and passed Ridgewood Blvd

Join us for the fifth part of the Iroquoia end to end. Today we’ll be walking from Governors Road to the intersection with the Chedoke Radial Trail passing the Hermitage Cascade, Sherman’s Falls and Tiffany Falls. The terrain is rolling and wooded for the most part with a couple of climbs.

You can register for Parts 5-7 at the same time on August 31, 2019. The next hikes in the series are on September 28th and October 26th.

Car shuttle in effect at start and end of hike. All must take part in the car shuttle. Please arrange your own transportation or accommodation if you need. Location (Google Maps): Beaver Valley Section, Maps 25 and 26. Meet at Duncan Crevice Caves Nature Reserve parking lot (Km 33.3) on 9th Sideroad just east of Blue Mountain-Euphrasia Townline. From Hwy 10/89 just east of Shelburne, take County Rd 124 north to Grey County Rd 4. Turn left/west and at Maxwell, turn right/north onto Grey County Rd 2. Turn left/west onto Grey County Rd 19 to 10th Line where the road jogs sharply to the right, then continues on left/west as 9th Sideroad. Parking is on the south side, just before you reach Duncan.

We will car pool back to Artemesia-Euphrasia Townline and 4th Line A (Km 46.4). We will hike north and east along the escarpment through old growth forest with fall colours at their peak. From the meet location we will cycle for 12 km to 82.9 on Map 32 which is the east end of Sideroad 15 on the east side of Owen Sound. We will then hike for 15.4 km back along the main trail to the meet location. Today’s hike brings us closer to the end of the section. There are nice views over the lake and city of Burlington before we head north and cross Dundas. There is some road work today, bring water and lunch. Be sure to dress for the weather it is unpredictable

Directions will depend on whether you use 407 or QEW.
Travel the QEW to Brant St exit in Burlington. Get off and drive north just past Upper Middle Rd. There is a plaza on the right,the Tim Horton’s is in the plaza.
If traveling 407 go west to Dundas St. Turn right to Brant St. Turn left and plaza will be be the left. Look for the hike leader. The instruction to the car shuffle will be provided at 9:00 am and the group will leave this site soon after . Please be on time. This will be the meeting location for hike #8 too.

In the morning we will visit HUMBER ARBORETUM along the West Humber River behind Humber College North Campus. The 250 acres of botanical gardens and natural areas serve as a conservation area. There are beautiful themed gardens, meadow paths and woodland trails. A donation to the Escarpment Legacy Fund would be appreciated.
In the afternoon, we will visit BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (a Hindu temple). The complex consists of the first traditional hand carved Hindu Mandir, Haveli and the Heritage Museum, it spreads over 18 acres. Thousands of tons of Turkish limestone, Carrara Italian marble and Indian pink sandstone have been used, without any steel, to build the complex. The largest of its kind in Canada and was constructed according to ancient Hindu scripture guidelines. A free guided tour is arranged.
Please respect the following visitor guidelines: 1) No photo-videography inside any building. 2) No food or drinks are allowed inside. 3) Visitors are required to remove their foot wear before entering the Mandir or any part of the Haveli complex.
This is a joint event with Charity Hike Club. Preregistration is optional but helps save time during the sign-in process.

We will climb up the Cascade Trail to meet the Bruce trail at approximate km 64. We will then take the Mission Rd Side trail to km 60.1 and then return via the main trail.  If you do not wish to climb Blue Mountains, you could meet us at the parking lot near km 64 at 10:15am. Bring lunch, snacks and sufficient water.

Participant Guidelines

  1. All kms. mentioned are according to maps in Edition 29 of The Bruce Trail Reference.
  2. Please arrive 10 minutes before start of hike.
  3. Participants are expected to wear appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain. In summer, sturdy footwear is necessary. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate. It is a good idea to bring these items if there is snow on the ground and the hike leader will advise you as to the best footwear for the day. Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  4. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  5. For spring and summer hikes bring sunscreen, insect repellent and water.
  6. Please leave dogs at home.

Description

We will walk to start of the hike at Km 23.8 for a 9 km round trip in and back.  Hike through old cedar groves, meadows and woodlots, above the cliffs at Metcalf, with views of Mill Creek Valley.  Bring: snacks and water.

Participant Guidelines

  1. All kms. mentioned are according to maps in Edition 29 of The Bruce Trail Reference.
  2. Please arrive 10 minutes before start of hike.
  3. Participants are expected to wear appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain. In summer, sturdy footwear is necessary. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate. It is a good idea to bring these items if there is snow on the ground and the hike leader will advise you as to the best footwear for the day. Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
  4. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  5. For spring and summer hikes bring sunscreen, insect repellent and water.
  6. Please leave dogs at home.

Meet: 9:45a.m. Union Station, inside at the Clock Tower, to get the 10:13a.m. GO train to Aldershot.
Level: Moderate
On this daytrip we will explore the parks and places at the edges of Toronto using the GO train. From Aldershot GO station we will meander over to the Royal Botanical Garden and Dundurn Castle, a national historic site and museum. Optional visit inside the museum, price $9:50-$11:50. No dropouts. Bring water and lunch for the walk. Return to Union Station by the 16:01 GO train from Aldershot. People may also join us for a pub stop in Hamilton, and returning to Toronto by GO bus. You can also meet us at Aldershot GO station for the start of the walk.
