Burlington Waterfront Evening Hike

Description

This is the first in a 7 part series covering the Beaver Valley Section. Today we will shuttle back to Blantyre (km 114.3) and hike through old cedar and hardwood forests, past deep crevices, over a waterfall and up and down the escarpment a few times.  Bring snacks lunch and water.

We will make our way through the woodlands, have a snack by Fisher Pond then return to our cars. Along the way we may see spring flowers and small wildlife.

There will be ample time to drive 15 minutes to the Iroquoia Club AGM at St. James United Church, 306 Parkside Drive, Watertown where lunch will be served. Please register for the AGM to assist in planning food. Fisher Pond is an 87-acre oasis of nature on the escarpment overlooking Burlington. With the help of hundreds of donors BTC has secured this land for future generations. It is a gem.

Explore both popular and hidden spots on the Bruce Peninsula. These outings provide a leisurely appreciation of the environment with an emphasis on the flora.

Hopefully we will come upon a profusion of Trout Lilies, Red and White Trilliums, violets and possibly Hepatica and Spring Beauty.

In the past we have seen Blue Cohosh, Cut Leaved Toothwort, False Mitrewort, Squirrel Corn, Dutchman’s Breechs and Virginia Waterleaf in abundance.

We’ll meet on Martin Rd. at the back of Ancaster Community and Recreation Centre which is on Jerseyville across from Ancaster High and Vocational School. Martin Rd. is the street that turns north from Jerseyville Rd. at the west side of the community centre.
Drive north on Martin till you come to the last parking area on your right before a steep hill. Wear boots.
An optional put stop follows the hike.

Victoria Day Weekend in the Lower Bruce Peninsula, May 17-20.  The spring flowers will welcome us on three hiking days on the Bruce Trail and its side trails to form loops.   We stay and have our meals at a comfortable resort on Lake Huron.  Our daily hikes of approximately 15 km will be at a moderate pace to take pictures of the spring flowers and Georgian Bay. All old favourites, but note we are starting from a different location. Dogs are permitted, but must be leashed and owners scoop the poop. Hiking boots required. Meet in the parking lot of the small plaza at the corner of Hwy. 8 and Kirby in Greensville. To get there, drive west on King St. through Dundas and up the Dundas Hill to the top of the escarpment. At Bullock’s Corners, turn left to stay with Hwy. 8 and drive up the hill to Kirby which is the first street on the right at at the top of the hill. Turn on Kirby and then immediately right again into the parking area between the two rows of shops and offices.

Continue north, then turn right/east and drive about 1.2 km to the sharp bend. Look for entrance to parking on your left/north.
