Participant Guidelines
- All kms. mentioned are according to maps in Edition 29 of The Bruce Trail Reference.
- Please arrive 10 minutes before start of hike.
- Participants are expected to wear appropriate attire for the weather and the terrain. In summer, sturdy footwear is necessary. In winter, snowshoes or icers/crampons are needed when conditions dictate. It is a good idea to bring these items if there is snow on the ground and the hike leader will advise you as to the best footwear for the day. Hiking poles are a good idea in any season, especially if the terrain is rocky or slippery. Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear prevents injuries and shows consideration for a safe and positive group hiking experience.
- Always carry I.D. and your health card.
- For spring and summer hikes bring sunscreen, insect repellent and water.
- Please leave dogs at home.

Description
Look for this walk this spring. This hike was cancelled as our guest hike leader can't lead the hike at this time. Please visit the park where there is a beautiful side trail and an interesting board walk.
Guest interpretive leader is Dianne Watkins member of Friends of Kerncliff Park, Burlington’s Field and Stream Rescue Team and Master’s candidate at U of Waterloo studying ecological restoration. Please arrive at 8:45AM to sign in and the hike will start at 9AM. This education walk will start at the parking lot at City View Park where there is lots of parking. Kerns Road is one way going north after Kerncliff park. To enter from Dundas (#5) turn south on Kerns Road and take 2nd entrance on the left hand side. If coming from south take the first driveway on the right. From the City View parking lot, we'll work our way down into Kerncliff Park after stopping at the beautiful lookout point, and walk through the forest to the old Nelson Quarry where there is now a beautiful wetland and boardwalk. Dianne will talk about restoration work that FKP and community collaborators have done in this City of Burlington-managed park. The Bruce Trail runs along the top and has the Ian Reid side trail running through. We'll talk about the invasive species such as buckthorn and dog strangling vine as well as the native species planting that has encouraged wildlife to come back like red wing blackbirds, northern map turtles and northern water snakes. The trail has some slopes and if it’s dry we'll take the steep rocky path up the escarpment after visiting the old quarry. Wear good boots and be prepared for ticks that are active above 4C. Poles help with keeping yourself stable over roots and rocks. More information about ticks https://conservationhamilton.ca/ticks-and-lyme-disease/ For a map of Kerncliff https://atasteoftrace.com/2016/10/27/burlington-hikes-kerncliff-park/ orhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/ontario/ian-reid-side-trail-and-bruce-trail-loop We will be taking it slow especially on the steep trail back up to City View. Bring water and snacks.
Registration helps me figure out how many people to look for and let you know if the hike is cancelled due to high winds or thunderstorms. Contact Bron brontreg@cogeco.ca 905-637-7136
